We are looking for a HIS Machine Learning Specialist to join our team and support the integration of AI and machine learning into Tanzania’s public health supply chain systems. This role involves building predictive models, automating data analysis, and creating tools that enhance decision-making across the supply chain and pharmaceutical sectors.
The specialist will collaborate with internal teams, partners, and government stakeholders to support developing and implementing data-driven solutions.

Project Overview
The USAID NextGen Ugavi Bora, Afya Bora activity aims to strengthen Tanzania’s public health supply chain and pharmaceutical services. The project focuses on improving access to quality-assured, affordable health commodities by building local capacity to manage supply chains and enhancing pharmaceutical regulatory systems.
The HIS Machine Learning Specialist will contribute to this effort by developing AI-driven tools that support smarter, more efficient health commodity planning and distribution.
Key Responsibilities
Machine Learning for Supply Chain and Pharmaceutical Optimization
- Design and implement predictive analytics models to forecast demand, optimize inventory, and identify data anomalies.
- Apply AI tools to support procurement, distribution, and service delivery planning.
Data Integration and System Enhancement
- Work with multiple health information systems like eLMIS to improve data collection, integration, and quality.
- Prepare datasets for machine learning workflows.
Collaboration and Capacity Building
- Collaborate with local partners and government officials to co-develop solutions.
- Provide training and support to stakeholders on the use of AI/ML tools.
Governance and Compliance
- Ensure all models and data used comply with local and international data standards.
- Maintain proper documentation and version control of models.
Qualifications
Applicants must be Tanzanian nationals or lawful residents and meet the following criteria:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Data Science, AI, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Supply Chain Analytics, Public Health Informatics, or a related field.
- At least 2 years of hands-on experience applying machine learning to real-world problems, ideally in healthcare or supply chain contexts.
- Proficiency in Python or R and experience with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn.
- Skilled in working with large datasets and data cleaning/integration processes.
- Solid understanding of databases like SQL, PostgreSQL, or MySQL.
- Familiarity with Tanzania’s health supply chain systems, especially eLMIS, is a strong advantage.
- Experience working with project management tools (e.g., Jira).
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical teams.
- Fluency in English and Swahili (written and spoken).
- Previous experience with USAID or donor-funded projects is desirable.
- Experience collaborating with the Government of Tanzania and NGOs is a plus.
